Raymond Alexie participated in 7 K300 Race Committee events this winter and won every single one of them. This weekend he added a victory in the Campout Race to wins in The Season Opener, The Holiday Classic, The Akiak Dash, The Bogus Creek 150, The February 50 Doubles and The Spring Challenge. That perfect record made Alexie impossible to beat in the inaugural Delta Championship Series but it was still an exciting weekend on the trail.
Mushers and their teams traveled 42 miles from Bethel yesterday to a designated camp site on the Gweek River. The trip upriver is not a race, with mushers departing and pacing on their own schedule. Racers, handlers, race staff and a few spectators enjoyed a beautiful night with sunshine extending late into the night. The race began at 10:00 AM this morning when teams headed back to Bethel with a mass start.
By the halfway point Alexie had a sizable lead, which he maintained to the finish, coming in 15 minutes ahead of second place finisher, John George. Spectators were then surprised by an exciting finish as the next 4 racers finished within about a minute and a half of each other. Only 7 minutes separated 2nd place and 7th. Full results are listed below.
We'll post final Delta Championship Series results tomorrow, after some final tabulations are made.
